Read an RPG Book in Public Week(s) in 2010

February 28th - March 6th
July 25th - 31st

September 26th - October 2nd
I have to admit, I rather like this idea, though I'm notorious for compartmentalizing my life to the point that mixing arenas is often uncomfortable for me. Basically it works like this: pick up an RPG manual and read it in public area where there's at least moderate foot traffic, in order to attract people who might ask you about it. Essentially, it's a way of creating visibility for the hobby and promote it's overall acceptibility.

In light of the hobby's poorer reputation--or just outright ignorance of it in general--this is really an intriguing way to show how "normal" it really is. :)

Full details including a few ground rules.

I don't understand the supposed shame that surrounds RPGs, at least it's not LARP

Seriously though, if someone knows the meaning of an obscure DnD ref -either a book, something someone says, or a tshirt for example - then they already know that it's cool. Otherwise it's not something they're going to be familiar with and they're more likely to be curious about it.

Anything that's going to attract and welcome new players has to be good.

Dungeonmum (thanks for commenting BTW!) I agree. Although I did chuckle when I saw this posted on Boing Boing--specifically the second comment. ;)

I took my "new" copy of Magic Realm to McDonalds, to read while my kids were in the playplace.

Lots of looks. Two questions. Steered both the questioners to my local FLGS.

How's that for shilling for free.

Word verficiation: empooter: a computer that can read your moods.

BTW, i'm going to do this on the bus with my new copy of S&W boxed set. Will be interesting to see if anyone asks, it being a rather uncomfortable place to strike up a conversation with a stranger, despite seeing the same strangers every day.

A bus? You're really living up to your namesake there Paladin!

:)

What, Paladins can't take public transit? That's the ultimate in Lawful Good!

I take the bus to work twice a week, so my wife can drive the kids to karate (since week-day karate starts before I get home)

Oh I'm all for public transit. We're hoping to get more here in the next few years (expanded light rail). If there weren't 19 transfers for me to get to work I'd happily do the same!

:D
